The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup (formerly ICC World Twenty20) is the premier T20I tournament in international cricket. It has been organised by the International Cricket Council (ICC) since 2007. The tournament has seen a meteoric rise in the last two decades or so and is already one of the most popular events in the game. Here we are taking a look at the teams that have won the T20 World Cup so far.
ICC T20 World Cup winners list:
- T20 World Cup 2007 Winner- India
South Africa hosted the first edition of the T20 World Cup in 2007. 12 teams participated in the historic inaugural edition of the World Cup. For the group stage, the 12 teams were divided into four groups of three teams each. The top two teams from each group advanced to the next stage, that is the Super 8s.
In the Super 8s, the eight teams were divided into two groups. India, New Zealand, South Africa and England were in one group while Pakistan, Australia, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka were drawn in the other group.
The top two teams from each group then advanced to the last four. From the first group, India and New Zealand made it to the semifinal while from the second, Pakistan and New Australia progressed. India beat Australia while Pakistan beat New Zealand in the semifinals to set up a mouth-watering final. In the final, MS Dhoni-led beat Pakistan in a thrilling game to clinch the T20 World Cup.
- T20 World Cup 2009 Winner- Pakistan
12 teams participated in the second edition of the T20 World Cup as well. The 2009 T20 World Cup was held in England. Just like the inaugural edition, the 12 teams were divided into four groups. From the four groups, the top two of each group advanced to the Super 8s.
The eight teams were further divided into two groups of four teams each. After the first two rounds, South Africa, West Indies, Pakistan and Sri Lanka made it to the semifinals. Pakistan and Sri Lanka won their semifinal games to advance to the final for the second and first time respectively. In the final, Younis Khan-led Pakistan beat Sri Lanka to lift the T20 World Cup trophy.
- T20 World Cup 2010 Winner- England
For the 2010 edition, 12 teams qualified once again. West Indies hosted the tournament for the first time. The 12 teams were once again divided into four groups of three teams each and the top two teams from each group made it to the Super 8s.
In the Super 8s, England, Pakistan, New Zealand and South Africa were drawn in one group while Australia, Sri Lanka, West Indies and India were drawn in the other group. England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia then qualified for the semifinals before England and Australia made it to the final. In the title-decider, England beat Australia to win the World Cup for the first time.
- T20 World Cup 2012 Winner- West Indies
Like the first two editions, 12 teams featured in the third edition as well, hosted by Sri Lanka in 2012. It was also the first time that the T20 World Cup was held in Asia. After the group stage, the top two teams from each group made it to the Super 8s.
Sri Lanka, West Indies, New Zealand, England, Australia, Pakistan, India and South Africa advanced ahead of the group stage before Sri Lanka, Pakistan, West Indies and Australia made it to the last four. In the final, Daren Sammy-led West Indies beat Sri Lanka to win the tournament for the first time.
- T20 World Cup 2014 Winner- Sri Lanka
16 teams featured in the 2014 T20 World Cup that was hosted by Bangladesh. With the number of teams increasing, the ICC also changed the format of the competition. In the first stage, eight teams participated and played for the two spots in the Super 10s. The top eight ICC ranked teams had already made the cut for the Super 10s.
In the Super 10s, the teams fought it out for the semifinals spots. The top two teams from the two Super 10 groups qualified for the semifinals. In the final, Sri Lanka faced India and went on to win the game to win the World Cup for the very first time.
- T20 World Cup 2016 Winner- West Indies
India hosted the 2016 T20 World Cup with 16 teams featuring in the tournament. West Indies scripted history in the 2016 T20 World Cup by becoming the first team to win the T20 World Cup twice. They beat England in the final with Carlos Brathwaite famously hitting Ben Stokes for four sixes in a row to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat for his side.
- T20 World Cup 2021 Winner- Australia
Australia were the winners of the 2021 T20 World Cup held in UAE. They beat their Trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand in the final to clinch the trophy for the first time. 16 teams had featured in the 2021 edition as well although the Super 10 was replaced by Super 12.

- T20 World Cup 2022 Winner- England
In 2022, Australia hosted the T20 World Cup for the first time with 16 teams featuring in the competition again. England went on to beat Pakistan in the final to win the tournament. England also became the second team after West Indies to win the trophy twice.
